Of all the possible subjects for a painting, dogs are one of the most special to me. Their honesty, energy and optimism inspire me with ideas for colors, shapes and moods. As someone who (I hope) gets dogs, I try to communicate as much of their unique personalities and the immediacy of that in-the-moment dog experience as I can in each painting.

In scaling up my work for the BIG DOGS show, I wanted to put the viewer inside the dog’s world, whether it’s a puppy swirling around in a blurred forest, a white shepherd greeting a glorious morning, or a basset hound rolling around in the grass. Starting with a collection of digital photos collected over seven years of visits to dog parks in Baltimore and Brooklyn, NY, I looked for the dogs who best captured the joy and soulfulness of their kind.
If you are interested in contacting me about the work on display, please email me or call 410-323-2192.

In order to give back to the animals who inspire so much of my work, 5% of the sales from this show will be donated to the Baltimore animal rescue group Recycled Love. Their mission statement follows:

Recycled Love, a grassroots non–profit organization, is dedicated to finding the forever homes for Baltimore City’s unwanted, abused, abandoned and death–row–shelter dogs, and to undertaking all necessary measures to work towards “No More Homeless Pets in Baltimore.”

Update: Thanks to everyone who helped make the show such a success. Here’s a note from Recycled Love director Sally Jennings regarding the money donated from the show sales:

“Thanks Gil. That is so great. It will pay for a couple of pups. You were very kind to do this for Recycled Love. Your paintings are inspiring and I am happy we are a part of it.”
